GOOD GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA: Rethinking Accountability and Transparency in the Twenty-First Century
At the heart of Nigeria’s development malaise is the failure of governance, essentially accountability and transparency. In “Good Governance in Nigeria: Rethinking Accountability and Transparency in the Twenty-First Century,” Dr. Portia Roelofs draws on original fieldwork in Nigeria to argue for an innovative re-conceptualisation of good governance. She offers a new account of what it means for leaders to be accountable and transparent while introducing the “Lagos Model” of governance, which theorises 'socially embedded' good governance. Her thesis challenges the mainstream interpretation of Nigerian politics as “principled reformers vs. patronage politics.” This ground-breaking work challenges the long-held assumptions of the World Bank that African political systems are pathologically dysfunctional.
What can the new governments – at the federal and state levels – learn about accountability and transparency? What can civil society organisations learn about this new interpretation of the concepts as they seek more rigorous engagement with the government in what Acemoglu and Robinson term the “narrow corridor.”
